If you’re considering installing a home lift, one of the most common questions is: how long will it take? The good news is that with the right lift and a professional installation team, the process can be quicker and smoother than you might expect. At Axis Lifts, we’ve installed lifts in everything from family homes to penthouses and multi-level townhouses—each with its own timeline and challenges.
Here’s a breakdown of what impacts the installation time of a residential lift, from preparation to handover.
Understanding the Installation Timeline
The timeline for installing a home lift depends on several key factors:
- The type of lift system (e.g., screw & nut vs hydraulic)
- The site requirements (new build vs retrofit)
- The number of stops and doors
- The level of pre-installation construction required
On average, most standard residential lift installations take 1 to 2 weeks once on-site work begins. However, the total project duration—including planning, design, site preparation, and installation—may span several weeks to a few months depending on complexity.
How Long Does the Installation Itself Take?
For a basic two-stop lift, here’s what you can expect:
Screw & Nut Lift (e.g. Aritco)
These lifts come with their own shaft and require minimal site works. Installation typically takes 5 to 8 working days on site.

Hydraulic Lift (e.g. Part 18)
These systems require a structural shaft and more site coordination. Installation usually takes 10 to 14 working days.

Pre-Installation Preparation
Before installation begins, certain elements must be completed:
- Cut-outs or shaft construction
- Lift pit (depth varies by model)
- Headroom clearance
- Power supply for construction and operation
If you’re retrofitting a lift into an existing home, Axis Lifts will conduct a full site inspection and work with your builder to determine what needs to be completed in advance. You can learn more in our blog on Installation Process – Home Lift.
Real Project Examples
Every installation is different. Here are a few examples from recent projects:
Penthouse Case Study
This compact lift was installed in a three-storey Gold Coast penthouse. Despite limited space, the project was completed in under two weeks and included glass shaft installation and automated biparting swing doors.
Townhouse Lift Installations
A builder installed lifts across several townhouses to appeal to more buyers. Because it was a new build with plans designed around the lift, install times were faster and more efficient.
Commissioning and Final Testing
Once the lift is installed, Axis Lifts performs full commissioning checks. These include:
- Load testing (typically 110% of lift capacity)
- Inspection of safety systems and doors
- Phone and emergency system testing
For screw & nut lifts, this process is relatively quick. For hydraulic lifts, it may take up to a full day. Our technicians also provide full operational training upon handover. Learn more about our Lift Maintenance services.
How Early Should You Start the Process?
If you’re building a new home, we recommend getting in touch at the planning stage so we can advise on shaft dimensions, pit requirements, and power needs. For existing homes, contact us as early as possible to allow time for builder quotes and structural adjustments.
Some homeowners finalise their lift selection in just two weeks; others take a few months. Either way, Axis Lifts will guide you from concept to completion with expert advice and support every step of the way.
