How Much Space Do I Need For A Home Lift?
Lift technology has come a long way in the last 150 years since its invention, to the point where home lifts can now be built to take up as little space as a standard armchair would. The amount of space you will need to install a home lift depends on your requirements.
How Big Is A Home Elevator?
The size of a home elevator will vary depending on your specific needs. For example, a home lift installed for the use of an ambulant person will have a smaller footprint than a lift that will need to be able to accommodate a wheelchair user and potentially their carer as well.
The standard platform size for public access wheelchair lifts is 1250 mm x 800mm (this does not include the shaft). However, for private use, if you know the dimensions of the wheelchair to be used, the platform can be much smaller. The size of the shaft depends on the type of drive system that the lift will use and can be as little as a few centimetres wider that the lift platform.
How Much Headroom Is Needed?
When considering how much space is needed to install a home lift it is important not to overlook the minimum headroom requirement provided by the manufacturer. This measurement is taken from the floor of the highest landing to the ceiling or first obstruction. We offer lifts with minimum headroom requirements starting from 2240mm (less than the standard ceiling height in Australia), plus, our Aritco 6000 residential lift has the option of a half door height for a minimum headroom requirement of as little as 1100mm.
What Is The Minimum Pit Requirement?
The final space requirement you will need to be aware of when considering a home lift is the pit size (this is the space below the lift shaft. Most platform lifts require a pit of between 50mm to 100mmm, however, generally no pit is required when there is a threshold or a ramp.
