Summary: Home lifts are usually custom made for each project rather than bought off the shelf. The lift needs to suit the actual home, including the available space, number of levels, door configuration, finishes, indoor or outdoor location, and how the customer will use it. That is why the quote process matters, because it helps work out which lift will properly fit the building before it is ordered and manufactured.

One question we get quite a lot is whether we have lifts sitting in stock.

Someone will call through and ask, “Do you have anything available now?” or “Have you got a lift in stock?”

The answer is usually no, because all of our lifts are custom made per job. We do not really hold stock of lifts that can just go into any house or building.

A lot of people do not realise that at first. They might think it is more like buying something that is already built and ready to go. But with a lift, it has to suit the actual site.

It has to suit the size, the levels, the doors, the finishes and how the customer is going to use it.

Why A Lift Is Not Usually Sitting In Stock

A lift is not usually something we can just pull off the shelf and put into a home.

Every job is a little bit different.

One house might need a compact lift because the space is tight. Another might need a larger residential lift. Some people might be travelling between two levels. Others might need three or more stops. Some might want glass. Some might want stainless steel doors. Some might need something more practical and simple.

That is why the lift is usually ordered for the job.

When someone calls and asks whether we have one in stock, the simple answer is:

All of our lifts are custom made per job, so we do not actually hold stock of anything.

It is not us trying to make the process more complicated. It is just that the lift needs to be right for the building.

What Needs To Be Worked Out First?

Before a lift can be ordered, we need to understand what the customer is actually looking for.

The main things that can change the lift are:

  • How many levels it travels
  • The size of the lift
  • The space available
  • What kind of doors they want
  • The finishings
  • Whether it is going inside or outside
  • The location of the job

Those details affect the product, the sizing and the final price.

Even when someone just wants a rough indication at the start, we still need to get a basic idea of the job. Otherwise, we could be talking about a lift that does not actually suit the home.

Why Size And Number Of Stops Matter

The size of the lift is one of the first things that matters.

If there is only a small area available, that will affect what lift can be used. If the customer wants a larger lift, then the space needs to allow for that.

The number of levels also changes things. A lift travelling between two floors is not necessarily the same as a lift travelling through three or more levels.

That is why we ask questions before giving proper pricing. It is not just “a home lift”. It is a lift that needs to work in that particular home.

Doors And Finishes Also Change The Order

The doors and finishes are another reason lifts are custom made.

Some customers want stainless steel doors. Some want glass. Some want the lift to blend in with the rest of the home. Others are more focused on the practical side and just want something that works well for access.

With residential lifts, people do customise them. A lot of that comes down to what kind of doors they want and what finishings they want.

Those choices need to be made before the lift is manufactured, because they are part of the order.

Why Lead Times Are Normal

Because the lift is custom made, there is usually a lead time.

That can surprise some people when they first call. They might be hoping there is a lift ready to go straight away. But most of the time, the lift needs to be quoted, ordered, manufactured and then installed.

The lead time depends on the product, the job and what is being selected.

That is just part of getting a lift that suits the home properly.

The Quote Comes Before The Lift

The proper process starts with understanding the job.

We need to know what the customer wants, where the lift is going, how many levels it needs to travel, what space is available and whether there are any particular finishes or door options they are looking at.

From there, the right lift can be recommended.

That is why a quote matters. It is not just about giving a price. It is about working out what lift actually fits the job.

Can You Buy A Home Lift Off The Shelf?

Not really.

Some lift products may be more standard than others, but the lift still needs to be selected and ordered for the project.

The sizing, doors, number of levels, finishings and site conditions all matter. Even if two customers are both asking for a home lift, the final solution might be different.

So if you call through and ask if there is a lift in stock, the answer will usually be that our lifts are custom made per job.

That way, you are not just getting a lift. You are getting the lift that suits the space, the home and what you actually need it to do.
